도시쥐와 시골쥐

A Town Mouse once visited a relative who lived in the country.

도시쥐는 예전에 시골에 사는 친척을 방문했다.

For lunch the Country Mouse served wheat stalks, roots, and acorns, with a dash of cold water for drink.

점심으로 시골쥐는 밀대, 뿌리, 그리고 도토리를 제공했고, 음료수로 약간의 찬 물을 줬다.

The Town Mouse ate very sparingly, nibbling a little of this and a little of that,

도시쥐는 매우 아껴서 먹었다, 이것 조금 저것 조금 먹으면서,

and by her manner making it very plain that she ate the simple food only to be polite.

그녀의 매너 때문에 간단한 음식을 먹는 것이 결국 예의 바르게 되는 것을 매우 평범하게 만들었다.

After the meal the friends had a long talk,

식사 후에 그 친구들은 긴 수다를 가졌다

or rather the Town Mouse talked about her life in the city while the Country Mouse listened.

오히려 시골쥐가 듣고 도시쥐는 도시생활에 대해 알하는 편이었다.

They then went to bed in a cozy nest in the hedgerow and slept in quiet and comfort until morning.

그들은 관목안에 아늑한 보금자리에서 잠들었고 아침까지 조용하고 편안하게 잠잤다.

In her sleep the Country Mouse dreamed she was a Town Mouse with all the luxuries and delights of city life that her friend had described for her.

잠자면서 시골쥐는 그녀의 친구가 설명했던 도시생활의 사치와 기쁨을 가진 도시쥐가 되는 꿈을 꾸었다.

So the next day when the Town Mouse asked the Country Mouse to go home with her to the city, she gladly said yes.

그래서 도시쥐가 함께 도시 집에 가자고 요청한 다음 날, 그녀는 기쁘게 허락했다.

When they reached the mansion in which the Town Mouse lived,

그들이 도시쥐가 사는 대저택에 도착했을 때,

they found on the table in the dining room the leavings of a very fine banquet.

그들은 식당의 식탁에서 매우 훌륭한 연회의 남은 음식물을 발견했다.

There were sweetmeats and jellies, pastries, delicious cheeses,

사탕과 젤리, 페이스트리, 맛있는 치즈가 있었다.

indeed, the most tempting foods that a Mouse can imagine.

정말로 쥐가 상상할 수 있는 가장 미각을 돋우는 음식들이 있었다.

But just as the Country Mouse was about to nibble a dainty bit of pastry,

하지만 시골쥐가 페이스트리의 한 입을 조금씩 막 먹으려고 할 때,

she heard a Cat mew loudly and scratch at the door.

그녀는 고양이가 크게 야옹하며 문을 긁는 소리를 들었다.

In great fear the Mice scurried to a hiding place,

크게 두려워서 쥐들은 은신처로 급히 달려갔다.

where they lay quite still for a long time, hardly daring to breathe.

그곳에서 그들은 오랫동안 상당히 조용히 있었고, 거의 감히 숨도 쉬지 못 했다.

When at last they ventured back to the feast,

마침내 그들이 위험을 무릅쓰고 연회 자리로 돌아왔을 때,

the door opened suddenly and in came the servants to clear the table,

문이 갑자기 열리더니 하인이 들어와서 식탁을 치웠다.

followed by the House Dog.

그리고 집을 지키는 개가 뒤따라 왔다.

The Country Mouse stopped in the Town Mouse's den only long enough to pick up her carpet bag and umbrella.

시골쥐는 그녀의 여행용 가방과 우산을 집어들 만큼 충분히 오랫 동안만 도시쥐의 은신처에 머물렀다

"You may have luxuries and dainties that I have not,"

너는 내가 가지지 못한 화려한 것과 맛있는 것을 가질 지도 몰라,

she said as she hurried away,

그녀가 서둘러 떠나면서 말했다.

"but I prefer my plain food and simple life in the country with the peace and security that go with it."

하지만 나는 평화와 안전이 함께 있는 시골에서의 평범한 음식과 단순한 생활이 더 좋아.

_Poverty with security is better than plenty in the midst of fear and uncertainty._

안전한 가난이 두려움과 불확실이 한창 많은 것보다  더 좋다.
