The Bell Deep - part 6

 

"Then there was a king called Knud.

그때 Knud라는 왕이 있었다

He bowed low before bishops and monks,

그는 주교와 수도승 앞에서 낮게 고개를 숙였다

but when he unjustly oppressed the people of Vendelbo

그러나 그가 부당하게 벤델보의 국민들을  억압했을 때

with heavy taxes and hard words,

무거운 세금과 욕설로

they armed themselves with weapons

국민들은 스스로 무장하고

and drove him away

그를 쫓아냈다

as if he had been a wild beast.

마치 그가 야생의 짐승인 것처럼

He sought refuge in this church

그는 이 교회로 피신했다

and bolted fast the gate and doors.

대문과 문들을 꽉 잠궜다

I have heard tell

나는 소문을 들었다

how the furious mob surrounded the sacred building,

그 격노한 폭도들이 어떻게 그 신성한 건물을 둘러쌌는 지에 대해

until the crows and ravens, and even the jackdaws, became alarmed by the tumult.

까마귀와 큰까마귀, 그리고 심지어 갈까마귀까지도 그 폭동에 놀랐다

They flew up in and out of the tower

그들은 탑의 안밖으로 날아다녔고

and peered down on the multitude below;

아래에 그 군중을 응시했다

they gazed in at the church windows

그들은 교회 창문을 뚫어지게 쳐다보고

and shrieked out what they saw.

그들이 본 것을 새된 목소리로 말했다

"King Knud knelt and prayed before the altar 

크누드 왕은 제단 앞에서 무릎꿇고 기도했다

while his brothers, Erik and Benedict, stood

그의 형제들인 에릭과 베네딕트는 서있고

guarding him with drawn swords.

뽑은 칼로 왕을 지키면서

But the King's servant, the false Blake, betrayed his master,

하지만 왕의 종인 거짓된 블레이크가 그의 주인을 배신했다

and when those outside knew

그리고 밖에 있는 그 사람들이 알았을 때

where he could be hit,

왕이 어디에서 명중될 수 있을 지를

one of them hurled a stone in through the windows,

사람들 중 한 명이 창문들을 통해서 돌을 세게 던졌다.

and the King lay dead!

그리고 그 왕은 죽었다!

Then there were shouts and screams from the angry mob,

그때 성난 폭도들로부터 외침과 비명이 있었다,

and cries, too, from the flocks of terrified birds,

그리고 겁먹은 새떼들로 부터 역시 우는 소리들도 있었다.

and I joined them all.

그리고 나는 그들 모두와 함께 했다.

I rang and sang, 'Ding-dong! Ding-dong!'

나는 울고 노랬했다, '딩-동! 딩-동!'
