THE LION AND THE MOUSE

사자와 생쥐

A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws.

사자가 그의 큰 머리를 발위에 얹은 채 숲속에서 잠이 들었다.

A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly,

겁많은 어린 생쥐가 그에게 갑자기 다가와서,

and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose.

놀라서 서둘러 달아나서 사자의 코를 가로질러 달렸다.

Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.

낮잠에서 깬 사자가 그녀를 죽이기 위해 작은 생명체 위에 그의 거대한 발을 화가 나서 올렸다.

"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse.

용서해 주세요! 그 불쌍한 생쥐가 간청했다.

"Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."

저를 가게 해 주시면 언젠가 분명히 보답할게요.

The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him.

사자는 생쥐가 언젠가 그를 도울 수 있다고 생각에 상당히 즐거웠다.

But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.

그는 관대했고 결국 그 생쥐를 놓아주었다.

Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest,

며칠 후에, 숲속에서 그의 먹이 몰래 접근하는 동안,

the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net.

그 사자는 사냥꾼의 그물에 걸려 잡혔다.

Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring.

탈출할 수 없어서, 그는 성난 포효로 그 숲을 채웠다.

The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net.

그 생쥐는 그 목소리를 알았고 그 사자기 그물에서 발버둥치는 것을 빨리 발견했다.

Running to one of the great ropes that bound him,

그를 묶은 큰 밧줄 중 하나에게 달려가서,

she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.

그것이 잘라질 때까지 갉았다, 그리고 곧 그 사자는 풀려났다.

"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse.

제가 당신에게 보답할 거라는 말에 당신은 웃었죠?, 그 생쥐가 말했다.

"Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion."

이제 생쥐라도 사자를 도울 수 있다는 것을 알겠지요.

_A kindness is never wasted._

도시쥐와 시골쥐

A Town Mouse once visited a relative who lived in the country.

도시쥐는 예전에 시골에 사는 친척을 방문했다.

For lunch the Country Mouse served wheat stalks, roots, and acorns, with a dash of cold water for drink.

점심으로 시골쥐는 밀대, 뿌리, 그리고 도토리를 제공했고, 음료수로 약간의 찬 물을 줬다.

The Town Mouse ate very sparingly, nibbling a little of this and a little of that,

도시쥐는 매우 아껴서 먹었다, 이것 조금 저것 조금 먹으면서,

and by her manner making it very plain that she ate the simple food only to be polite.

그녀의 매너 때문에 간단한 음식을 먹는 것이 결국 예의 바르게 되는 것을 매우 평범하게 만들었다.

After the meal the friends had a long talk,

식사 후에 그 친구들은 긴 수다를 가졌다

or rather the Town Mouse talked about her life in the city while the Country Mouse listened.

오히려 시골쥐가 듣고 도시쥐는 도시생활에 대해 알하는 편이었다.

They then went to bed in a cozy nest in the hedgerow and slept in quiet and comfort until morning.

그들은 관목안에 아늑한 보금자리에서 잠들었고 아침까지 조용하고 편안하게 잠잤다.

In her sleep the Country Mouse dreamed she was a Town Mouse with all the luxuries and delights of city life that her friend had described for her.

잠자면서 시골쥐는 그녀의 친구가 설명했던 도시생활의 사치와 기쁨을 가진 도시쥐가 되는 꿈을 꾸었다.

So the next day when the Town Mouse asked the Country Mouse to go home with her to the city, she gladly said yes.

그래서 도시쥐가 함께 도시 집에 가자고 요청한 다음 날, 그녀는 기쁘게 허락했다.

When they reached the mansion in which the Town Mouse lived,

그들이 도시쥐가 사는 대저택에 도착했을 때,

they found on the table in the dining room the leavings of a very fine banquet.

그들은 식당의 식탁에서 매우 훌륭한 연회의 남은 음식물을 발견했다.

There were sweetmeats and jellies, pastries, delicious cheeses,

사탕과 젤리, 페이스트리, 맛있는 치즈가 있었다.

indeed, the most tempting foods that a Mouse can imagine.

정말로 쥐가 상상할 수 있는 가장 미각을 돋우는 음식들이 있었다.

But just as the Country Mouse was about to nibble a dainty bit of pastry,

하지만 시골쥐가 페이스트리의 한 입을 조금씩 막 먹으려고 할 때,

she heard a Cat mew loudly and scratch at the door.

그녀는 고양이가 크게 야옹하며 문을 긁는 소리를 들었다.

In great fear the Mice scurried to a hiding place,

크게 두려워서 쥐들은 은신처로 급히 달려갔다.

where they lay quite still for a long time, hardly daring to breathe.

그곳에서 그들은 오랫동안 상당히 조용히 있었고, 거의 감히 숨도 쉬지 못 했다.

When at last they ventured back to the feast,

마침내 그들이 위험을 무릅쓰고 연회 자리로 돌아왔을 때,

the door opened suddenly and in came the servants to clear the table,

문이 갑자기 열리더니 하인이 들어와서 식탁을 치웠다.

followed by the House Dog.

그리고 집을 지키는 개가 뒤따라 왔다.

The Country Mouse stopped in the Town Mouse's den only long enough to pick up her carpet bag and umbrella.

시골쥐는 그녀의 여행용 가방과 우산을 집어들 만큼 충분히 오랫 동안만 도시쥐의 은신처에 머물렀다

"You may have luxuries and dainties that I have not,"

너는 내가 가지지 못한 화려한 것과 맛있는 것을 가질 지도 몰라,

she said as she hurried away,

그녀가 서둘러 떠나면서 말했다.

"but I prefer my plain food and simple life in the country with the peace and security that go with it."

하지만 나는 평화와 안전이 함께 있는 시골에서의 평범한 음식과 단순한 생활이 더 좋아.

_Poverty with security is better than plenty in the midst of fear and uncertainty._

안전한 가난이 두려움과 불확실이 한창 많은 것보다  더 좋다.

도시쥐와 시골쥐

A Country Mouse invited a Town Mouse, an intimate friend,
한 시골쥐가 친한 친구인, 도시쥐를 초대했다.
to pay him a visit, and partake of his country fare.
그를 방문해서 그의 시골 음식을 같이 먹자고
As they were on the bare plough-lands,
그들이 텅 빈 경지에 있을 때,
eating their wheat-stalks and roots pulled up from the hedge-row,
산 울타리에서 뽑힌 밀 줄기와 뿌리를 먹으면서,
the Town Mouse said to his friend:
도시쥐가 그의 친구에게 말했다:
"You live here the life of the ants,
"너는 개미의 삶을 여기서 사는 구나,
while in my house is the horn of plenty.
반면에 풍요의 뿔이 나의 집에 있지만.
I am surrounded with every luxury,
나는 모든 사치로 둘러 싸여 있어.
and if you will come with me,
그리고 만약에 네가 나와 함께 갈 거면,
as I much wish you would,
네가 그러기를 내가 많이 바라듯이,
you shall have an ample share of my dainties."
너는 나의 진미의 충분한 몫을 가질 거야."
The Country Mouse was easily persuaded,
그 시골쥐는 쉽게 설득되었다,
and returned to town with his friend.
그리고 그의 친구와 함께 도시로 돌아갔다.
On his arrival,
그가 도착하자 마자,
the Town Mouse placed before him bread, barley, beans, dried figs, honey, raisins,
그 도시쥐는 그 앞에 빵, 보리, 콩, 말린 무화과, 꿀, 건포도를 놓았다.
and, last of all, brought a dainty piece of cheese from a basket.
그리고, 최후로, 바구니로부터 맛 좋은 치즈 조각을 가져왔다.
The Country Mouse, being much delighted at the sight of such good cheer,
그러한 좋은 만찬을 보고 너무 기뻐하면서, 그 시골쥐는
expressed his satisfaction in warm terms,
마음에서 우러나는 말씨로 그의 만족을 표현했다.
and lamented his own hard fate.
그리고 그 자신의 가혹한 운명을 한탄했다.
Just as they were beginning to eat,
그들이 막 먹기 시작하고 있을 때,
some one opened the door,
어떤 사람이 문을 열었다,
and they both ran off squeaking,
그리고 그들 둘 다는 찍찍 소리를 내며 도망쳤다,
as fast as they could,

to a hole

so narrow that two could only find room in it by squeezing.

They had scarcely again begun their repast

when some one else entered to take something out of a cupboard,
그 밖의 어떤 사람이 찬장에서 어떤 것을 가지러 들어왔다,
on which the two Mice, more frightened than before,
찬장 위에서, 전보다 더 겁먹은  두 쥐들은
ran away and hid themselves.
달아나서 숨었다.
At last the Country Mouse, almost famished,
마침내 거의 굶주린, 시골쥐는
thus addressed his friend:
그래서 그의 친구에게 말을 걸었다:
"Although you have prepared for me so dainty a feast,
"비록 네가 나를 위해 너무 맛 좋은 진수성찬을 준비했지만,
I must leave you to enjoy it by yourself.
나는 네가 혼자 그것을 즐길 수 있게 너를 떠나야만 해.
It is surrounded by too many dangers to please me."
그 진수성찬은 너무 많은 위험들에 둘러 쌓여 있어서 나를 기쁘게 할 수 없어."

Better a little in safety, than an abundance surrounded by danger.
위험에 둘러 쌓인 풍요보다 안전한 소박함이 더 좋다.

The Mouse, the Frog, and the Hawk

생쥐, 개구리, 그리고 매


A Mouse, by an unlucky chance,
어쩌다 운이 나쁜, 한 생쥐가
formed an intimate acquaintance with a Frog.
어떤 개구리와 친하게 아는 사이가 되었다.
The Frog one day, intent on mischief,
어느 날, 나쁜 짓에 열중한, 그 개구리가
bound the foot of the Mouse tightly to his own.
그 생쥐의 발을 자신의 발에 꽉 묶었다.
Thus joined together,
그렇게 함께 연결되어서,
the Frog led his friend toward the pool
그 개구리는 그의 친구를 물 웅덩이 쪽으로 이끌었다.
in which he lived,
거기서 그가 살고 있는,
until he reached the very brink,
그가 바로 그 가장자리에 도달할 때까지
when suddenly jumping in,
그리고 그때 갑자기 뛰어들면서,
he dragged the Mouse in with him.
그는 그 생쥐를 함께 끌어 넣었다.
The Frog enjoyed the water amazingly,
그 개구리는 놀랍게도 그 물을 즐겼다,
and swam croaking about
그리고 사방으로 개굴 개굴 울면서 수영했다.
as if he had done a meritorious action.
마치 그가 칭찬할 만한 행위를 했던 것처럼
The unhappy Mouse was soon suffocated with the water,
그 불운의 생쥐는 곧 그 물에 숨이 막혔다,
and his dead body floated about on the surface,
그의 죽은 몸은 표면 위에서 사방에 떠다녔다,
tied to the foot of the Frog.
그 개구리의 발에 묶여서
A Hawk observed it,
매 한 마리가 그것을 관찰했다,
and, pouncing upon it,
그리고, 그것에 갑자기 달려들어서,
carried it up aloft.
그것을 높이 날랐다.
The Frog, being still fastened to the leg of the Mouse,
여전히 그 생쥐의 다리에 묶여 있는, 그 개구리는
was also carried off a prisoner,
또한 포로로 유괴되었다,
and was eaten by the Hawk.
그리고 그 매에게 먹혔다.

Harm hatch, harm catch.
남 잡이가 제 잡이.
