THE OAK AND THE REEDS

오크나무와 갈대

A Giant Oak stood near a brook in which grew some slender Reeds.

거대한 오크나무가 몇몇의 가느다란 갈대가 자라는 시내 근처에 서있다.

When the wind blew,

바람이 불 때,

the great Oak stood proudly upright with its hundred arms uplifted to the sky.

그 커다란 오크나무는 그 수백개의 팔을 하늘로 들어올리며 똑바로 자랑스럽게 서있었다.

But the Reeds bowed low in the wind and sang a sad and mournful song.

하지만 갈대들은 바람속에서 낮게 고개를 숙이고 슬프고 애처로운 노래를 불렀다.

"You have reason to complain," said the Oak.

"당신들이 불평하는 것은 당연합니다", 오크나무가 말했다.

"The slightest breeze that ruffles the surface of the water

가장 경미한 물의 표면에 물결이 일게하는 미풍조차도

makes you bow your heads,

당신이 머리를 숙이게 만드는군요,

while I, the mighty Oak, stand upright and firm before the howling tempest."

반면에 힘센 저 오크나무는 울부 짖는 폭풍우 앞에서도 똑바로 단단히 서 있습니다.

"Do not worry about us," replied the Reeds. 

우리에 대해 걱정 말아요", 갈대들이 대답했다.

"The winds do not harm us.

바람은 우리에게 해를 끼치지 않아요.

We bow before them

우리가 그들 앞에서 고개를 숙이면

and so we do not break.

우리는 정말로 부러지지 않아요.

You, in all your pride and strength, have so far resisted their blows.

당신의 자만과 강함속에서, 당신은 지금까지 그들의 강풍에 저항해 왔을 겁니다.

But the end is coming."

하지만 끝이 오고 있어요.

As the Reeds spoke

갈대들이 말한 것처럼

a great hurricane rushed out of the north.

커다란 허리케인이 북쪽에서 돌진했다.

The Oak stood proudly and fought against the storm,

오크나무는 자랑스럽게 서서 그 폭풍에 맞서 싸웠다,

while the yielding Reeds bowed low.

반면에 유연한 갈대들은 낮게 고개를 숙였다.

The wind redoubled in fury,

그 바람은 격노하여 두 배로 강해졌다.

and all at once the great tree fell,

그리고 갑자기 그 큰 나무가 쓰러졌고

torn up by the roots,

뿌리채 뽑혔다,

and lay among the pitying Reeds.

그리고 동정하는 갈대들 사이에 누웠다.

_Better to yield when it is folly to resist, than to resist stubbornly and be destroyed._

저항하는것이 어리석은 행동일때, 고집스럽게 저항해서 파괴되는 것보다 굴복하는 것이 더 낫다.
