사자와 당나귀

One day as the Lion walked proudly down a forest aisle,

어느날 사자가 숲의 통로를 거만하게 걷고

and the animals respectfully made way for him,

동물들이 존경스럽게 그에게 길을 비켜줄 때,

an Ass brayed a scornful remark as he passed.

당나귀가 지나가면서 경멸하는 소리를 냈다.

The Lion felt a flash of anger.

문득 화가 났다.

But when he turned his head and saw who had spoken, he walked quietly on.

하지만 그가 고개를 돌리고 누군지를 봤지만, 그는 조용히 계속 걸어갔다.

He would not honor the fool with even so much as a stroke of his claws.

그는 심지어 발톱의 한 번 타격조차 그 바보에게 존중하고 싶지 않았다.

_Do not resent the remarks of a fool. Ignore them._

바보의 말에 화를 내지 말고 무시해라.

사자와 생쥐

A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head resting on his paws.

사자가 그의 큰 머리를 발위에 얹은 채 숲속에서 잠이 들었다.

A timid little Mouse came upon him unexpectedly,

겁많은 어린 생쥐가 그에게 갑자기 다가와서,

and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Lion's nose.

놀라서 서둘러 달아나서 사자의 코를 가로질러 달렸다.

Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.

낮잠에서 깬 사자가 그녀를 죽이기 위해 작은 생명체 위에 그의 거대한 발을 화가 나서 올렸다.

"Spare me!" begged the poor Mouse.

용서해 주세요! 그 불쌍한 생쥐가 간청했다.

"Please let me go and some day I will surely repay you."

저를 가게 해 주시면 언젠가 분명히 보답할게요.

The Lion was much amused to think that a Mouse could ever help him.

사자는 생쥐가 언젠가 그를 도울 수 있다고 생각에 상당히 즐거웠다.

But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.

그는 관대했고 결국 그 생쥐를 놓아주었다.

Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest,

며칠 후에, 숲속에서 그의 먹이 몰래 접근하는 동안,

the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net.

그 사자는 사냥꾼의 그물에 걸려 잡혔다.

Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry roaring.

탈출할 수 없어서, 그는 성난 포효로 그 숲을 채웠다.

The Mouse knew the voice and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net.

그 생쥐는 그 목소리를 알았고 그 사자기 그물에서 발버둥치는 것을 빨리 발견했다.

Running to one of the great ropes that bound him,

그를 묶은 큰 밧줄 중 하나에게 달려가서,

she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.

그것이 잘라질 때까지 갉았다, 그리고 곧 그 사자는 풀려났다.

"You laughed when I said I would repay you," said the Mouse.

제가 당신에게 보답할 거라는 말에 당신은 웃었죠?, 그 생쥐가 말했다.

"Now you see that even a Mouse can help a Lion."

이제 생쥐라도 사자를 도울 수 있다는 것을 알겠지요.

_A kindness is never wasted._

A Fox who had never yet seen a Lion,
아직 결코 사자를 본 적이 없었던 한 여우가,
when he fell in with him by a certain chance for the first time in the forest,
숲에서 처음으로 어떤 경우에 그와 우연히 마주쳤을 때,
was so frightened
너무 겁먹어서
that he was near dying with fear.
그는 두려워서 거의 죽을 뻔 하였다.
On his meeting with him for the second time,
그가 두 번째로 그와 만나자 마자,
he was still much alarmed,
그는 아직도 많이 놀랐다,
but not to the same extent as at first.
하지만 처음처럼 같은 정도는 아니었다.
On seeing him the third time,
세 번째 그를 보자 마자,
he so increased in boldness
그는 너무 대담함이 늘어서
that he went up to him,
그가 그에게 다가가서,
and commenced a familiar conversation with him.
그와 친숙한 대화를 시작했다.

Acquaintance softens prejudices.
면식은 편견을 약화 시킨다.

A Gnat came and said to a Lion:
한 모기가 와서 사자에게 말했다:
"I do not the least fear you,
"나는 적어도 당신을 두려워하지 않아,
nor are you stronger than I am.
또한 당신은 나보다도 더 강하지 못해.
For in what does your strength consist?
너의 강함은 무엇으로 이루어져 있지?
You can scratch with your claws, and bite with your teeth
너는 너의 발톱으로 긁을 수 있고, 너의 이빨로 물 수 있다.
--so can a woman in her quarrels.
- 싸움 할 때 어떤 여성도 그럴 수 있다.
I repeat that I am altogether more powerful than you;
나는 반복한다. 나는 완전히 너보다 더 강력하다고;
and if you doubt it,
그리고 만약에 네가 의심한다면,
let us fight and see who will conquer."
싸우고 알아보자. 누가 이길 지를"
The Gnat, having sounded his horn,
경적을 울리면서, 그 모기는
fastened itself upon the Lion,
자신을 사자 위에 묶었다,
and stung him on the nostrils.
그리고 사자의 콧구멍을 찔렀다.
The Lion, trying to crush him,
그를 뭉개려고 시도하는 그 사자는,
tore himself with his claws,
그의 발톱으로 자신을 할퀴었다,
until he punished himself severely.
그가 심하게 자신을 처벌할 때까지
The Gnat thus prevailed over the Lion,
그래서 그 모기는 그 사자를 이겼다,
and buzzing about in a song of triumph,
그리고 승리의 노래를 하며 윙윙 거리면서,
flew away.
날아가 버렸다.
But shortly afterwards
하지만 곧 후에
he became entangled in the meshes of a cobweb,
그는 거미줄의 그물에 걸리게 되었다,
and was eaten by a spider.
그리고 한 거미에게 잡아 먹혔다.
He greatly lamented his fate, saying:
그는 크게 그의 운명을 한탄했다, 이렇게 말하면서:
"Woe is me, that I, who can wage war successfully with the hugest beasts,
"오 슬프도다, 가장 거대한 야수와 성공적으로 전쟁을 수행할 수 있는, 내가,
should perish myself from this spider."

사자와 수퇘지

On a summer day,
어느 여름 날에,
when the great heat induced a general thirst,
큰 더위가 일반적인 갈증을 일으키는,
a Lion and a Boar came at the same moment to a small well to drink.
한 사자와 수퇘지가 같은 순간에 물을 마시기 위해서 작은 우물로 왔다.
They fiercely disputed
그들은 사납게 논쟁했다.
which of them should drink first,
그들 중 누가 먼저 물을 마셔야만 하는지를,
and were soon engaged in the agonies of a mortal combat.
그리고 곧 사투의 몸부림을 시작하게 되었다.
On their stopping on a sudden to take breath for the fiercer renewal of the strife,
싸움의 더 사나운 재개를 위해서 숨을 쉬기 위해서 갑자기 그들이 멈추자 마자,
they saw some Vultures waiting in the distance
그들은 몇몇의 독수리들이 멀리서 기다리고 있는 것을 봤다.
to feast on the one which should fall first.
먼저 쓰러질 하나를 실컷 먹기 위해서
They at once made up their quarrel, saying:
그들은 동시에 화해했다, ~말하면서
"It is better for us to make friends, than to become the food of Crows or Vultures,
"우리가 까마귀나 독수리들의 먹이가 되는 것보다, 친구가 되는 것이 더 좋아,
as will certainly happen if we are disabled."
그것은 우리가 불구가 되면 분명히 일어나니깐."

Those who strive are often watched by others
싸우는 사람들은 자주 다른 사람들에게 감시된다.
who will take advantage of their defeat to benefit themselves.
이익을 얻기 위해서 그들의 싸움을 이용할 (다른 사람들)

The Ass, the Fox, and the Lion

당나귀, 여우, 그리고 사자

The Ass and the Fox, having entered into a partnership together,

함께 협력해 온, 당나귀와 여우가,

went out into the forest to hunt.

사냥하러 숲으로 나갔다.

They had not proceeded far,

그들은 멀리 나가지 못했었다,

when they met a Lion.

그리고 그때 그들은 어떤 사자를 만났다.

The Fox approached the Lion

그 여우는 사자에게 다가가서

and promised to contrive for him the capture of the Ass,

그를 위해 당나귀 잡는 것을 계획할 것을 약속했다,

if he would pledge his word

만약에 그가 그의 말을 서약한다면

that his own life should be spared.

자신의 목숨을 살려 준다라는(말)

On his assuring him that he would not injure him,

그가(사자) 그에게(여우) 해를 입히지 않을 것이라고  확신시키자 마자

the Fox led the Ass to a deep pit,

그 여우는 그 당나귀를 깊은 구덩이로 이끌었다.

and contrived that he should fall into it.

그리고 그가(당나귀) 그곳에(구덩이) 빠지독 계획했다.

The Lion, seeing that the Ass was secured, 

그 당나귀가 확보 된  것을 안, 그 사자는

immediately clutched the Fox,

즉시 그 여우를 꽉 잡았다,
and then attacked the Ass at his leisure.

그런 다음 틈이 있을 때 그 당나귀를 공격했다.

Traitors must expect treachery.

배신자는 배신을 예상해야만 한다.
