A Fox one day spied a beautiful bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a vine trained along the branches of a tree.

어느날 여우가 나무 가지를 따라서 자라도록 가꾸어진 포도 나무에 매달린 아름다운 한 송이의 익은 포도를 봤다.

The grapes seemed ready to burst with juice,

그 포도는 즙으로 터질 준비가 된 것 같았다,

and the Fox's mouth watered as he gazed longingly at them.

여우가 애타게 볼 때 입에서 군침이 돌았다.

The bunch hung from a high branch, and the Fox had to jump for it.

높은 나무 가지에 걸린 그 송이, 여우는 그것을 얻기 위해 뛰어야만 했다.

The first time he jumped he missed it by a long way.

그가 처음 점프를 했을 때 그는 훨씬 그것에 못 미쳤다.

So he walked off a short distance and took a running leap at it, only to fall short once more.

그래서 짧은 거리를 걸어서 나가 달려서 점프를 시도했지만, 한 번 더 부족했다.

Again and again he tried, but in vain.

Now he sat down and looked at the grapes in disgust.

A Dog and a Cock, who were the best of friends, wished very much to see something of the world.

So they decided to leave the farmyard and to set out into the world along the road that led to the woods.

The two comrades traveled along in the very best of spirits and without meeting any adventure to speak of.

At nightfall the Cock, looking for a place to roost, as was his custom, spied nearby a hollow tree that he thought would do very nicely for a night's lodging.

해질녁에 습관처럼 잠자리에 들 장소를 찾으면서 수탉은 생각하기에 하룻밤의 숙박을 위해선 정말로 충분할 것 같은 근처의 속이 빈 나무를 관찰했다.

The Dog could creep inside and the Cock would fly up on one of the branches.

개는 안으로 기어들어갈 수 있고 수탉은 그 나뭇가지 중 하나 위에 날아 오를 수 있을 것이다.

So said, so done, and both slept very comfortably.

그래서 말했다, 좋 아 됐어, 그리고 둘 다 매우 편안하게 잠을 잤다.

With the first glimmer of dawn the Cock awoke.

새벽의 첫 희미한 빛에 그 수탉은 눈을 떴다.

For the moment he forgot just where he was.

He thought he was still in the farmyard where it had been his duty to arouse the household at daybreak.

"If you will please go around to the door of my house at the foot of the tree, my porter will let you in."

"만약에 당신이 기꺼이 나무의 아랫 부분에 있는 저의 집의 문으로 돌아오신다면, 저의 문지기가 당신을 안으로 들여 보낼 겁니다."

The hungry but unsuspecting Fox, went around the tree as he was told,

배고 고프지만 의심하지 않는 여우는, 들은대로 나무를 돌아갔다,

and in a twinkling the Dog had seized him.

A Fox who had never yet seen a Lion,
아직 결코 사자를 본 적이 없었던 한 여우가,
when he fell in with him by a certain chance for the first time in the forest,
숲에서 처음으로 어떤 경우에 그와 우연히 마주쳤을 때,
was so frightened
너무 겁먹어서
that he was near dying with fear.
그는 두려워서 거의 죽을 뻔 하였다.
On his meeting with him for the second time,

he was still much alarmed,
그는 아직도 많이 놀랐다,
but not to the same extent as at first.

On seeing him the third time,

that he went up to him,

The Ass and the Fox, having entered into a partnership together,

went out into the forest to hunt.

They had not proceeded far,

when they met a Lion.

The Fox approached the Lion

and promised to contrive for him the capture of the Ass,

그를 위해 당나귀 잡는 것을 계획할 것을 약속했다,

if he would pledge his word

that his own life should be spared.

On his assuring him that he would not injure him,

the Fox led the Ass to a deep pit,

and contrived that he should fall into it.

The Lion, seeing that the Ass was secured,

immediately clutched the Fox,

and then attacked the Ass at his leisure.

그런 다음 틈이 있을 때 그 당나귀를 공격했다.

Traitors must expect treachery.

saying how earnestly he desired to make the acquaintance of the owner of so sweet a voice.

"If you will admit me," said he,

"I should very much like to spend the day with you."

"Sir, do me the favor to go round and wake up my porter,

" On the Fox approaching the tree,
"그 여우가 나무에 접근하자 마자,
the Dog sprang out and caught him and quickly tore him in pieces.

A bear boasted very much of his philanthropy,
