개구리와 황소

An Ox came down to a reedy pool to drink.

한 황소가 물을 마시기 위해서 갈대가 무성한 웅덩이에 다가왔다.

As he splashed heavily into the water,

그가 물 속에서 심하게 물을 튀기고 있을 때,

he crushed a young Frog into the mud.

그는 어린 개구리를 진흙 속으로 깔아 뭉갰다.

The old Frog soon missed the little one

나이가 많은 개구리가 곧 어린 개구리가 없다는 것을 알아차렸다.

and asked his brothers and sisters what had become of him.

그리고 그의 형제 자매들에게 그에게 무슨 일이 있었는지를 물었다.

"A great big monster," said one of them, "stepped on little brother with one of his huge feet!"

"엄청 큰 괴물이 그의 거대한 발 중 하나로 어린 형제를 밟았어요!"라고 그들 중 하나가 말했다.

"Big, was he!" said the old Frog, puffing herself up.

"그가 컸다고!" 그 나이가 많은 개구리는 몸을 부풀리면서 말했다 

"Was he as big as this?"

"Oh, much bigger!" they cried.

"오, 훨씬 더 컸어요!" 그들이 외쳤다.

The Frog puffed up still more.

그 개구리가 훨씬 더 몸을 부풀렸다.

"He could not have been bigger than this," she said.

"그는 이보다는 더 클 수 없을거야," 그녀가 말했다.

But the little Frogs all declared that the monster was much, much bigger

하지만 어린 개구리들은 그 괴물이 훨씬, 훨씬 더 컸다고 모두 단언했다.

and the old Frog kept puffing herself out more and more until, all at once, she burst.

그러자 그 나이가 많은 개구리는 점점더 계속 몸을 부풀렸다가 갑자기 그녀는 터졌다.

_Do not attempt the impossible._

불가능을 시도하지 마라.

토끼와 개구리

The Hares,
산토끼들이,
oppressed with a sense of their own exceeding timidity,
그들 자신의 엄청난 겁많음의 감각으로 압박받고,
and weary of the perpetual alarm
끊임 없는 놀람에 싫증난 (산토끼)
to which they were exposed,
그들이 노출되는 (놀람),
with one accord
다 함께
determined to put an end to themselves and their troubles,
그들 자신과 그들의 문제를 끝낼 것을 결심했다,
by jumping from a lofty precipice into a deep lake below.
아주 높은 절벽에서 아래에 깊은 호수 속으로 뛰어들어서

As they scampered off in a very numerous body
그들이 매우 수 많은 덩어리로 급히 사라졌을 때
to carry out their resolve,
그들의 결심을 실행하기 위해서,
the Frogs lying on the banks of the lake
그 호수의 제방 위에 누워 있던 개구리들이
heard the noise of their feet,
그들의(산토끼들의) 발 소리를 듣고,
and rushed helter-skelter to the deep water for safety.
안전을 위해 깊은 물로 당황하여 돌진했다.
On seeing the rapid disappearance of the Frogs,
그 개구리들의 재빠른 사라짐을 보자마자,
one of the Hares cried out to his companions:
그 산토끼들 중의 하나가 그의 동료들에게 큰 소리로 말했다:
"Stay, my friends,
"멈춰, 나의 친구들,
do not do as you intended;
너희들이 의도한대로 하지 마;
for you now see
왜냐하면 너희들은 지금 보기 때문이야.
that other creatures who yet live
아직 살고 있는 다른 생물들이
are more timorous than ourselves."
우리들 자신보다 더 겁많다는 것을"

We are encouraged by seeing others
우리는 다른 사람들을 보는 것에 의해서 격려된다.
that are worse off than ourselves.
우리들 자신보다 형편이 더욱 나쁜 (다른 사람들)

사기꾼 개구리

A Frog once made proclamation to all the beasts 

한 개구리가 모든 동물들에게 예전에 선언했다.

that he was a learned physician,

그가 박학한 의사였다고,

and able to heal all diseases.

그리고 모든 질병을 치료할 수 있다고

A Fox asked him:

한 여우가 그에게 말했다:

"How can you pretend to prescribe for others, 

너는 어떻게 다른 사람들에게 처방하는 체 할 수 있니?

and you are unable to heal your own lame gait and wrinkled skin?"

게다가 너는 너 자신의 절름발이의 걸음과 주름진 피부를 치료할 수 없다.

Those who pretend that they can mend others

다른 사람을 고칠 수 있는 체하는 사람들은

should first mend themselves,

먼저 스스로를 고쳐야만 한다,

and then they will be more readily believed.
그런 다음 그들은 더 쉽게 신뢰될 것이다.

The Mouse, the Frog, and the Hawk

생쥐, 개구리, 그리고 매


A Mouse, by an unlucky chance,
어쩌다 운이 나쁜, 한 생쥐가
formed an intimate acquaintance with a Frog.
어떤 개구리와 친하게 아는 사이가 되었다.
The Frog one day, intent on mischief,
어느 날, 나쁜 짓에 열중한, 그 개구리가
bound the foot of the Mouse tightly to his own.
그 생쥐의 발을 자신의 발에 꽉 묶었다.
Thus joined together,
그렇게 함께 연결되어서,
the Frog led his friend toward the pool
그 개구리는 그의 친구를 물 웅덩이 쪽으로 이끌었다.
in which he lived,
거기서 그가 살고 있는,
until he reached the very brink,
그가 바로 그 가장자리에 도달할 때까지
when suddenly jumping in,
그리고 그때 갑자기 뛰어들면서,
he dragged the Mouse in with him.
그는 그 생쥐를 함께 끌어 넣었다.
The Frog enjoyed the water amazingly,
그 개구리는 놀랍게도 그 물을 즐겼다,
and swam croaking about

as if he had done a meritorious action.

The unhappy Mouse was soon suffocated with the water,

and his dead body floated about on the surface,
그의 죽은 몸은 표면 위에서 사방에 떠다녔다,
tied to the foot of the Frog.
그 개구리의 발에 묶여서
A Hawk observed it,
매 한 마리가 그것을 관찰했다,
and, pouncing upon it,
그리고, 그것에 갑자기 달려들어서,
carried it up aloft.
그것을 높이 날랐다.
The Frog, being still fastened to the leg of the Mouse,
여전히 그 생쥐의 다리에 묶여 있는, 그 개구리는
was also carried off a prisoner,

and was eaten by the Hawk.
