모기와 황소

A Gnat flew over the meadow with much buzzing for so small a creature and settled on the tip of one of the horns of a Bull.

모기 한 마리가 너무나 작은 생명체인 것에 비해 상당히 윙윙거리면서 목초지 위를 날아서 황소의 뿔 중 하나의 끝에 앉았다.

After he had rested a short time, he made ready to fly away.

잠시 쉰 후에, 그는 날아갈 준비를 했다.

But before he left he begged the Bull's pardon for having used his horn for a resting place.

하지만 그는 떠나기 전에 그가 쉬는 장소로 황소의 뿔을 사용한 것에 용서를 구했다.

"You must be very glad to have me go now," he said.

"제가 떠나니 당신은 기쁘겠군요." 그가 말했다.

"It's all the same to me," replied the Bull.

"I did not even know you were there."

황소와 수레바퀴

A pair of Oxen were drawing a heavily loaded wagon along a miry country road.

한 쌍의 황소들이 진흙같은 시골길을 따라서 무겁게 실은 마차를 끌고 가고 있었다.

They had to use all their strength to pull the wagon, but they did not complain.

그들은 그들의 모든 힘을 다 해서 마차를 끌어야만 했지만, 불평을 하지는 않았다.

The Wheels of the wagon were of a different sort.

마차의 바퀴는 다른 종류였다.

Though the task they had to do was very light compared with that of the Oxen,

비록 그들이 해야만 하는 일이 황소들의 일과 비교해 봤을 때 매우 가볍더라도,

they creaked and groaned at every turn.

그들은 굽이마다 삐걱거리고 신음 소리를 냈다.

The poor Oxen, pulling with all their might to draw the wagon through the deep mud, had their ears filled with the loud complaining of the Wheels.

깊은 진흙을 뚫고 마차를 끌기 위해서 모든 힘을 다해서 끌고 있는 불쌍한 황소들은 바퀴들의 시끄러운 불평으로 귀가 가득했다.

And this, you may well know, made their work so much the harder to endure.

너도 알다시피, 이러한 사실은 그들의 일을 견디기에 훨씬 더 어렵게 만들었다.

"Silence!" the Oxen cried at last, out of patience.

"조용!" 황소들이 마침내 참을성이 바닥이 나서 외쳤다.

"What have you Wheels to complain about so loudly?

"너희 바퀴들은 왜 그렇게 크게 불평해야만하니?

We are drawing all the weight, not you, and we are keeping still about it besides."

우리가 모든 무게를 끌고 있다, 너희가 아니라, 그리고 우리는 게다가 그것에 대해 침묵을 지키고 있잖아."

_They complain most who suffer least._

가장 적게 고생하는 사람들이 가장 불평을 한다.

개구리와 황소

An Ox came down to a reedy pool to drink.

한 황소가 물을 마시기 위해서 갈대가 무성한 웅덩이에 다가왔다.

As he splashed heavily into the water,

그가 물 속에서 심하게 물을 튀기고 있을 때,

he crushed a young Frog into the mud.

그는 어린 개구리를 진흙 속으로 깔아 뭉갰다.

The old Frog soon missed the little one

나이가 많은 개구리가 곧 어린 개구리가 없다는 것을 알아차렸다.

and asked his brothers and sisters what had become of him.

그리고 그의 형제 자매들에게 그에게 무슨 일이 있었는지를 물었다.

"A great big monster," said one of them, "stepped on little brother with one of his huge feet!"

"엄청 큰 괴물이 그의 거대한 발 중 하나로 어린 형제를 밟았어요!"라고 그들 중 하나가 말했다.

"Big, was he!" said the old Frog, puffing herself up.

"그가 컸다고!" 그 나이가 많은 개구리는 몸을 부풀리면서 말했다 

"Was he as big as this?"

"그가 이만큼 컸니?"

"Oh, much bigger!" they cried.

"오, 훨씬 더 컸어요!" 그들이 외쳤다.

The Frog puffed up still more.

그 개구리가 훨씬 더 몸을 부풀렸다.

"He could not have been bigger than this," she said.

"그는 이보다는 더 클 수 없을거야," 그녀가 말했다.

But the little Frogs all declared that the monster was much, much bigger

하지만 어린 개구리들은 그 괴물이 훨씬, 훨씬 더 컸다고 모두 단언했다.

and the old Frog kept puffing herself out more and more until, all at once, she burst.

그러자 그 나이가 많은 개구리는 점점더 계속 몸을 부풀렸다가 갑자기 그녀는 터졌다.

_Do not attempt the impossible._
