소년들과 개구리들

Some Boys were playing one day at the edge of a pond in which lived a family of Frogs.

어느날 몇몇 소년들이 어느 개구리 가족이 살고 있는 연못의 가장자리에서 놀고 있었다.

The Boys amused themselves by throwing stones into the pond so as to make them skip on top of the water.

그 소년들은 물수제비를 날리기 위하여 연못 속으로 돌을 던지며 놀았다.

The stones were flying thick and fast and the Boys were enjoying themselves very much;

그 돌을은 세차게 날아가고 있었고 그 소년들은 매우 많이 즐겁게 시간을 보내고 있었다;

but the poor Frogs in the pond were trembling with fear.

하지만 불쌍한 연못의 개구리들은 두려움으로 떨고 있었다.

At last one of the Frogs, the oldest and bravest, put his head out of the water, and said,

마침내 가장 나이가 많고 가장 용감한 개구리가 그의 머리를 물 밖으로 내밀고, 말했다.

"Oh, please, dear children, stop your cruel play!

"얘들아, 제발 잔인한 놀이를 멈춰!

Though it may be fun for you, it means death to us!"

비록 그것이 너희들에게 재미있을지 몰라도, 그것은 우리에게 죽음을 의미한다."

_Always stop to think whether your fun may not be the cause of another's unhappiness._

너의 재미가 또다른 사람의 불행의 원인이 아닐지 항상 멈춰서 생각해라.

왕을 바란 개구리들

The Frogs were tired of governing themselves.

개구리들은 스스로 제어하는데 질렸다.

They had so much freedom that it had spoiled them,

그들의 너무 많은 자유가 그들을 망쳐버렸다.

and they did nothing but sit around croaking in a bored manner

그리고 그들은 지루한 태도로 개골개골하면서 빈둥빈둥 보낼  뿐이다.

and wishing for a government that could entertain them with the pomp and display of royalty,

그리고 그들에게 왕족의 화려함과 과시를 대접할 수 있는 정부를 바란다.

and rule them in a way to make them know they were being ruled.

그리고 그들이 지배당하고 있다는 것을 알게 만드는 방식으로 그들을 지배하는 정부를 바란다.

No milk and water government for them, they declared.

그들을 위한 어떤 우유와 물의 관리가 없다고 그들은 선언한다.

So they sent a petition to Jupiter asking for a king.

그래서 그들은 주피터에게 왕이 필요하다는 청원을 보냈다.

Jupiter saw what simple and foolish creatures they were,

주피터는 그들이 얼마나 단순하고 어리석은 생물인지 봤다,

but to keep them quiet and make them think they had a king he threw down a huge log, 

하지만 그들을 조용히 시키고 그들이 왕을 가진 것으로 생각하게 만들기 위해서 그는 큰 통나무를 던졌다,

which fell into the water with a great splash. 

그 통나무는 크게 물이 튀기면서 물속으로 빠졌다.

The Frogs hid themselves among the reeds and grasses,

그 개구리들은 갈대와 풀속에 자신을 숨겼다,

thinking the new king to be some fearful giant.

새로운 왕은 어떤 두려운 거인이라고 생각하면서

But they soon discovered how tame and peaceable King Log was.

하지만 그들은 통나무가 얼마나 순종적이고 평화로운지를 곧 알게 되었다.

In a short time the younger Frogs were using him for a diving platform,

짧은 시간에 그 더 어린 개구리들은 잠수하기 위한 단으로 사용하고 있었다,

while the older Frogs made him a meeting place,

반면에 더 나이든 개구리들은 그를 집회소로 만들었다,

where they complained loudly to Jupiter about the government.

그리고 그 집회소에서 그들은 그 정치에 대해 주피터에게 크게 불평했다.

To teach the Frogs a lesson the ruler of the gods now sent a Crane to be king of Frogland.

그 개구리들에게 교훈을 가르쳐 주기 위해서 신들은 지배자는 지금 학을 보내서 개구리 나라의 왕이 되게 했다.

The Crane proved to be a very different sort of king from old King Log.

그 학은 옛날 왕인 통나무와는 매우 다른 종류인 것임이 드러났다.

He gobbled up the poor Frogs right and left and they soon saw what fools they had been.

그는 온 천지의 불쌍한 개구리들을 개걸스럽게 먹었다. 그리고 그들은 곧 그들이 얼마나 바보였는지를 알았다.

In mournful croaks they begged Jupiter to take away the cruel tyrant before they should all be destroyed.

슬퍼하는 울음소리로 그들은 주피터에게 간청하여 자신이 모두 파멸되기 전에 그 잔인한 폭군을 데려가라고 했다.

"How now!" cried Jupiter "Are you not yet content?

"그건 또 어찌된 셈이냐!" 주피터가 외쳤다. "너희는 아직 만족하지 않느냐?"

You have what you asked for and so you have only yourselves to blame for your misfortunes."

너희는 요구한 것을 가졌다. 그래서 너희는 너희 불운에 대해 순전히 너희들 탓이다."

개구리와 황소

An Ox came down to a reedy pool to drink.

한 황소가 물을 마시기 위해서 갈대가 무성한 웅덩이에 다가왔다.

As he splashed heavily into the water,

그가 물 속에서 심하게 물을 튀기고 있을 때,

he crushed a young Frog into the mud.

그는 어린 개구리를 진흙 속으로 깔아 뭉갰다.

The old Frog soon missed the little one

나이가 많은 개구리가 곧 어린 개구리가 없다는 것을 알아차렸다.

and asked his brothers and sisters what had become of him.

그리고 그의 형제 자매들에게 그에게 무슨 일이 있었는지를 물었다.

"A great big monster," said one of them, "stepped on little brother with one of his huge feet!"

"엄청 큰 괴물이 그의 거대한 발 중 하나로 어린 형제를 밟았어요!"라고 그들 중 하나가 말했다.

"Big, was he!" said the old Frog, puffing herself up.

"그가 컸다고!" 그 나이가 많은 개구리는 몸을 부풀리면서 말했다 

"Was he as big as this?"

"그가 이만큼 컸니?"

"Oh, much bigger!" they cried.

"오, 훨씬 더 컸어요!" 그들이 외쳤다.

The Frog puffed up still more.

그 개구리가 훨씬 더 몸을 부풀렸다.

"He could not have been bigger than this," she said.

"그는 이보다는 더 클 수 없을거야," 그녀가 말했다.

But the little Frogs all declared that the monster was much, much bigger

하지만 어린 개구리들은 그 괴물이 훨씬, 훨씬 더 컸다고 모두 단언했다.

and the old Frog kept puffing herself out more and more until, all at once, she burst.

그러자 그 나이가 많은 개구리는 점점더 계속 몸을 부풀렸다가 갑자기 그녀는 터졌다.

_Do not attempt the impossible._
