늑대와 그의 그림자

A Wolf left his lair one evening in fine spirits and an excellent appetite.

늑대 한 마리가 어느날 저녁에 썩 기분이 좋고 식욕이 돌아 그의 집에서 나왔다.

As he ran,

그가 달릴 때,

the setting sun cast his shadow far out on the ground,

지는 태양이 그의 그림자를 땅 위에 멀리 퍼지게 드리웠다.

and it looked as if the wolf were a hundred times bigger than he really was.

그리고 마치 그 늑대가 실제보다 100배는 더 커진 것 같았다.

"Why," exclaimed the Wolf proudly, "see how big I am!

"야", 그 늑대는 자랑스럽게 외쳤다, "내가 얼마나 큰지 봐라!"

Fancy me running away from a puny Lion!

내가 보잘것없는 사자에게서 달아난다니!

I'll show him who is fit to be king, he or I."

나는 그에게 둘 중에 누가 왕으로 적합한지 보여주겠다.

Just then an immense shadow blotted him out entirely,

바로 그때 거대한 그림자가 그를 전체적으로 덮어 없앴다,

and the next instant a Lion struck him down with a single blow.

그리고 그 다음 순간에 사자 한 마리가 그를 한 대 쳐서 때려눕혔다.

_Do not let your fancy make you forget realities._

너의 공상이 네가 현실을 잊게하지 말게해라.

THE SHEPHERD BOY AND THE WOLF

양치기 소년과 늑대

A Shepherd Boy tended his master's Sheep near a dark forest not far from the village. 

한 양치기 소년이 마을에서 멀지 않은 어두운 숲 근처에서 그의 주인의 양들을 돌보고 있었다.

Soon he found life in the pasture very dull.

곧 그는 목초지에서의 삶이 매우 지루하다는 것을 알았다.

All he could do to amuse himself was to talk to his dog or play on his shepherd's pipe.

즐기기 위해서 그가 할 수 있는 모든 일은 개와 대화하거나 양치기 피리를 부는 것이었다.

One day as he sat watching the Sheep and the quiet forest,

어느날 그가 양들과 조용한 숲을 보면서 앉아 있을 때,

and thinking what he would do

그리고 그가 무엇을 할 지를 생각하면서

should he see a Wolf,

그가 늑대를 본다면,

he thought of a plan to amuse himself.

그는 자신을 즐겁게 해줄 한 계획을 생각했다.

His Master had told him to call for help

그의 주인이 그에게 도움을 요청하라고 말했었다

should a Wolf attack the flock,

늑대가 양떼를 공격한다면,

and the Villagers would drive it away.

그러면 마을 사람들이 늑대를 쫓아낼 것이다.

So now, though he had not seen anything that even looked like a Wolf,

그래서 지금, 비록 그가 심지어 늑대처럼 생긴 어떤 것이라도 보지 못 했지만,

he ran toward the village shouting at the top of his voice, "Wolf! Wolf!"

그는 목소리를 최대한 높여, 늑대! 늑대!하고 외치면서 마을을 향해 달려갔다.

As he expected, the Villagers who heard the cry dropped their work and ran in great excitement to the pasture.

예상한 것처럼, 그 외침을 들은 마을 사람들은 그들의 일을 그만 두고 크게 흥분하여 목초지를 향해 달렸다.

But when they got there

하지만 그들이 거기에 도착했을  때

they found the Boy doubled up with laughter at the trick he had played on them.

그들은 그 소년이 속임수를 쓰고 우스워서 몸을 자지러뜨리는 것을 발견했다.

A few days later the Shepherd Boy again shouted, "Wolf! Wolf!"

며칠 후에 그 양치기 소년은 "늑대! 늑대!"하고 다시 외쳤다.

Again the Villagers ran to help him, only to be laughed at again.

다시 마을 사람들이 그를 돕기 위해서 달려갔지만, 결국 다시 비웃음을 당했다.

Then one evening as the sun was setting behind the forest and the shadows were creeping out over the pasture,

그러던 어느날 저녁 태양이 숲 뒤로 지고 있고 그림자가 목초지 위로 기어 나가고 있을 때,

a Wolf really did spring from the underbrush and fall upon the Sheep.

늑대 한 마리가 정말로 덤불로부터 튀어 나와 양들에게 덤벼들었다.

In terror the Boy ran toward the village shouting "Wolf! Wolf!"

겁이난 그 소년은 "늑대! 늑대?"하고 외치면서 마을을 향해 달렸다.

But though the Villagers heard the cry,

하지만 마을 사람들이 그 외치을 들었지만,

they did not run to help him as they had before. 

그들은 예전처럼 그를 도우러 달려가지 않았다.

"He cannot fool us again," they said.

"그는 우리를 다시 속일 수 없어," 라고 그들은 말했다.

The Wolf killed a great many of the Boy's sheep and then slipped away into the forest.

그 늑대는 수없이 많은 그 소년의 양들을 죽이고 나서 숲으로 사라졌다.

_Liars are not believed even when they speak the truth._

거짓말장이는 비록 그가 진실을 말할 지라도 밑어지지 않는다.

늑대와 두루미

A Wolf had been feasting too greedily, and a bone had stuck crosswise in his throat.

늑대가 너무 탐욕스럽게 포식을 하고 있었다, 그리고 뼈가 그의 목에 비스듬히 박혔다.

He could get it neither up nor down, and of course he could not eat a thing.

그늣 그것을 위나 아래로 가게 할 수 없었다, 물론 어떤 것도 먹을 수 없었다.

Naturally that was an awful state of affairs for a greedy Wolf.

당연히 그것은 탐욕스러운 늑대에게는 끔찍한 상황이었다.

So away he hurried to the Crane.

그래서 멀리 두루미에게 서둘러 갔다.

He was sure that she, with her long neck and bill, would easily be able to reach the bone and pull it out.

긴 목과 부리를 가진 그녀가 쉽게 뼈에 도달해서 그것을 꺼낼 것이라고 그는 확신했다.

"I will reward you very handsomely," said the Wolf, "if you pull that bone out for me."

네가 그 뼈를 내게서 꺼내 준다면, 나는 후하게 보상할 것이다. 라고 늑대가 말했다.

The Crane, as you can imagine, was very uneasy about putting her head in a Wolf's throat.

에상하듯이, 두루미는 자신의 목을 늑대의 목구멍 속에 넣는 것에 대하여 불안해했다.

But she was grasping in nature, so she did what the Wolf asked her to do.

하지만 그녀는 천성적으로 욕심이 많아서, 늑대가 요구한 것을 했다.

When the Wolf felt that the bone was gone, he started to walk away.

늑대는 그 뼈가 사라진 것을 느끼자, 떠나기 시작했다.

"But what about my reward!" called the Crane anxiously.

하지만 제 보상은요? 두루미가 애타게 외쳤다.

"What!" snarled the Wolf, whirling around. 

뭐라고! 늑대가 주변을 돌면서 으르렁거렸다.

"Haven't you got it?

너는 이해하지 못 했니?

Isn't it enough that I let you take your head out of my mouth without snapping it off?"

내가 너의 머리를 부러뜨리지 않고 입밖으로 빼게 한 것으로 충분하지 않아?

_Expect no reward for serving the wicked._

사악한 사람들을 돕는 것에 대한 어떤 보상도 기대하지 마라.

새끼 염소와 늑대

A frisky young Kid had been left by the herdsman on the thatched roof of a sheep shelter to keep him out of harm's way.

까부는 어린 새끼 염소는 목동이 그를 무사히 지키기 위해서 양의 보금자리의 초가지붕 위에 남겨졌었다.

The Kid was browsing near the edge of the roof,

그 염소는 지붕의 가장자리에서 연한 입을 뜯어 먹고 있었다.

when he spied a Wolf and began to jeer at him, making faces and abusing him to his heart's content.

그때 그는 얼굴을 찌푸리며 마음껏 늑대를 욕보이면서 늑대를 감시하고 놀리기 시작했다.

"I hear you," said the Wolf, "and I haven't the least grudge against you for what you say or do.

나는 너의 말을 듣는다, 그리고 나는 네가 말하거나 하는 행동에 대해 너에게 어떤 원한도 없다.

When you are up there it is the roof that's talking, not you."

네가 그 위에 있을 때, 말하는 것은 네가 아니라, 바로 지붕이다.

_Do not say anything at any time that you would not say at all times._

네가 늘 말하지 않곤 했던 그 어떤 것도 언제나 말하지 마라.
