소년들과 개구리들

Some Boys were playing one day at the edge of a pond in which lived a family of Frogs.

어느날 몇몇 소년들이 어느 개구리 가족이 살고 있는 연못의 가장자리에서 놀고 있었다.

The Boys amused themselves by throwing stones into the pond so as to make them skip on top of the water.

그 소년들은 물수제비를 날리기 위하여 연못 속으로 돌을 던지며 놀았다.

The stones were flying thick and fast and the Boys were enjoying themselves very much;

그 돌을은 세차게 날아가고 있었고 그 소년들은 매우 많이 즐겁게 시간을 보내고 있었다;

but the poor Frogs in the pond were trembling with fear.

하지만 불쌍한 연못의 개구리들은 두려움으로 떨고 있었다.

At last one of the Frogs, the oldest and bravest, put his head out of the water, and said,

마침내 가장 나이가 많고 가장 용감한 개구리가 그의 머리를 물 밖으로 내밀고, 말했다.

"Oh, please, dear children, stop your cruel play!

"얘들아, 제발 잔인한 놀이를 멈춰!

Though it may be fun for you, it means death to us!"

비록 그것이 너희들에게 재미있을지 몰라도, 그것은 우리에게 죽음을 의미한다."

_Always stop to think whether your fun may not be the cause of another's unhappiness._

너의 재미가 또다른 사람의 불행의 원인이 아닐지 항상 멈춰서 생각해라.

THE SHEPHERD BOY AND THE WOLF

양치기 소년과 늑대

A Shepherd Boy tended his master's Sheep near a dark forest not far from the village. 

한 양치기 소년이 마을에서 멀지 않은 어두운 숲 근처에서 그의 주인의 양들을 돌보고 있었다.

Soon he found life in the pasture very dull.

곧 그는 목초지에서의 삶이 매우 지루하다는 것을 알았다.

All he could do to amuse himself was to talk to his dog or play on his shepherd's pipe.

즐기기 위해서 그가 할 수 있는 모든 일은 개와 대화하거나 양치기 피리를 부는 것이었다.

One day as he sat watching the Sheep and the quiet forest,

어느날 그가 양들과 조용한 숲을 보면서 앉아 있을 때,

and thinking what he would do

그리고 그가 무엇을 할 지를 생각하면서

should he see a Wolf,

그가 늑대를 본다면,

he thought of a plan to amuse himself.

그는 자신을 즐겁게 해줄 한 계획을 생각했다.

His Master had told him to call for help

그의 주인이 그에게 도움을 요청하라고 말했었다

should a Wolf attack the flock,

늑대가 양떼를 공격한다면,

and the Villagers would drive it away.

그러면 마을 사람들이 늑대를 쫓아낼 것이다.

So now, though he had not seen anything that even looked like a Wolf,

그래서 지금, 비록 그가 심지어 늑대처럼 생긴 어떤 것이라도 보지 못 했지만,

he ran toward the village shouting at the top of his voice, "Wolf! Wolf!"

그는 목소리를 최대한 높여, 늑대! 늑대!하고 외치면서 마을을 향해 달려갔다.

As he expected, the Villagers who heard the cry dropped their work and ran in great excitement to the pasture.

예상한 것처럼, 그 외침을 들은 마을 사람들은 그들의 일을 그만 두고 크게 흥분하여 목초지를 향해 달렸다.

But when they got there

하지만 그들이 거기에 도착했을  때

they found the Boy doubled up with laughter at the trick he had played on them.

그들은 그 소년이 속임수를 쓰고 우스워서 몸을 자지러뜨리는 것을 발견했다.

A few days later the Shepherd Boy again shouted, "Wolf! Wolf!"

며칠 후에 그 양치기 소년은 "늑대! 늑대!"하고 다시 외쳤다.

Again the Villagers ran to help him, only to be laughed at again.

다시 마을 사람들이 그를 돕기 위해서 달려갔지만, 결국 다시 비웃음을 당했다.

Then one evening as the sun was setting behind the forest and the shadows were creeping out over the pasture,

그러던 어느날 저녁 태양이 숲 뒤로 지고 있고 그림자가 목초지 위로 기어 나가고 있을 때,

a Wolf really did spring from the underbrush and fall upon the Sheep.

늑대 한 마리가 정말로 덤불로부터 튀어 나와 양들에게 덤벼들었다.

In terror the Boy ran toward the village shouting "Wolf! Wolf!"

겁이난 그 소년은 "늑대! 늑대?"하고 외치면서 마을을 향해 달렸다.

But though the Villagers heard the cry,

하지만 마을 사람들이 그 외치을 들었지만,

they did not run to help him as they had before. 

그들은 예전처럼 그를 도우러 달려가지 않았다.

"He cannot fool us again," they said.

"그는 우리를 다시 속일 수 없어," 라고 그들은 말했다.

The Wolf killed a great many of the Boy's sheep and then slipped away into the forest.

그 늑대는 수없이 많은 그 소년의 양들을 죽이고 나서 숲으로 사라졌다.

_Liars are not believed even when they speak the truth._

거짓말장이는 비록 그가 진실을 말할 지라도 밑어지지 않는다.

소년과 개암(나무)들

A Boy was given permission to put his hand into a pitcher to get some filberts.

한 소년이 그의 손을 물주전자에 넣어 약간의 개암을 가져갈 수 있는 허락을  받았다.

But he took such a great fistful that he could not draw his hand out again.

그러나 그가 그렇게 한 주먹을 잡으니 손을 다시 뺄 수 없었다.

There he stood, unwilling to give up a single filbert and yet unable to get them all out at once.

단 하나의 개암도 포기하지 않고 한꺼번에 그 모든 것을 포기할 수 없어서 거기에 서 있었다.

Vexed and disappointed he began to cry.

짜증이 나고 실망해서 그는 울기 시작했다.

"My boy," said his mother, "be satisfied with half the nuts you have taken and you will easily get your hand out.

야야, 네가 잡은 견과의 절반에 만족해라 그러면 너는 손을 쉽게 뺄 것이다. 라고 그의 엄마가 말했다.

Then perhaps you may have some more filberts some other time."

그러면 아마도 너는 언젠가 좀더 많은 개암을 얻게 될 지도 몰라.

_Do not attempt too much at once._

한 꺼번에 너무 많은 것을 시도하지 마라.
