원숭이와 돌고래

A Sailor, bound on a long voyage,
긴 항해를 해야할 의무가 있는, 한 선원이
took with him a Monkey to amuse him
그를 즐겁게 해 줄 원숭이를 데려갔다.
while on shipboard.
배에 타는 동안
As he sailed off the coast of Greece,
그가 그리스 해안을 출범했을 때,
a violent tempest arose,
격렬한 폭풍우가 불기 시작했다,
in which the ship was wrecked,

and he, his Monkey and all the crew were obliged to swim for their lives.

A Dolphin saw the Monkey contending with the waves,

When the Dolphin arrived with his burden in sight of land not far from Athens,

he demanded of the Monkey

if he were an Athenian,

who answered that he was,

and that he was descended from one of the noblest families in that city.

The Dolphin then inquired

if he knew the Piræus (the famous harbor of Athens).

The Monkey, supposing that a man was meant, and being obliged to support his previous lie,

answered that he knew him very well,

The Dolphin, indignant at these falsehoods,

dipped the Monkey under the water,

and drowned him.

He who once begins to tell falsehoods
한 번 거짓말을 시작한 사람은
is obliged to tell others
어쩔 수 없이 다른 사람에게 말해야만 한다.
to make them appear true,
거짓말이 진실되게 보이게 만들기 위해서
and, sooner or later,
그리고, 조만간,
they will get him into trouble.
그 거짓말들은 그를 곤경에 빠뜨릴 것이다.
