개와 굴

A Dog, used to eating eggs,
알을 먹는 것에 익숙한 개가
saw an Oyster,
굴을 봤다,
and opening his mouth to its widest extent,
그리고 가장 넓게 그의 입을 벌리면서,
swallowed it down with the utmost relish,
최대한 음미하며 그것을 삼켰다.
supposing it to be an egg.
그것이 알이라고 추측하면서

Soon afterwards suffering great pain in his stomach,
곧 나중에 그의 배에서 큰 고통을 경험하면서,
he said:
그가 말했다:
"I deserve all this torment,
"나는 모든 이 고통을 받을 만하다,
for my folly
나의 어리석음 때문에
in thinking that everything round must be an egg."

Who acts in haste repents at leisure.

토끼와 개구리

The Hares,
산토끼들이,
oppressed with a sense of their own exceeding timidity,
그들 자신의 엄청난 겁많음의 감각으로 압박받고,
and weary of the perpetual alarm
끊임 없는 놀람에 싫증난 (산토끼)
to which they were exposed,
그들이 노출되는 (놀람),
with one accord
다 함께
determined to put an end to themselves and their troubles,
그들 자신과 그들의 문제를 끝낼 것을 결심했다,
by jumping from a lofty precipice into a deep lake below.
아주 높은 절벽에서 아래에 깊은 호수 속으로 뛰어들어서

As they scampered off in a very numerous body
그들이 매우 수 많은 덩어리로 급히 사라졌을 때
to carry out their resolve,
그들의 결심을 실행하기 위해서,
the Frogs lying on the banks of the lake
그 호수의 제방 위에 누워 있던 개구리들이
heard the noise of their feet,
그들의(산토끼들의) 발 소리를 듣고,
and rushed helter-skelter to the deep water for safety.
안전을 위해 깊은 물로 당황하여 돌진했다.
On seeing the rapid disappearance of the Frogs,
그 개구리들의 재빠른 사라짐을 보자마자,
one of the Hares cried out to his companions:
그 산토끼들 중의 하나가 그의 동료들에게 큰 소리로 말했다:
"Stay, my friends,
"멈춰, 나의 친구들,
do not do as you intended;
너희들이 의도한대로 하지 마;
for you now see
왜냐하면 너희들은 지금 보기 때문이야.
that other creatures who yet live
아직 살고 있는 다른 생물들이
are more timorous than ourselves."
우리들 자신보다 더 겁많다는 것을"

We are encouraged by seeing others
우리는 다른 사람들을 보는 것에 의해서 격려된다.
that are worse off than ourselves.
우리들 자신보다 형편이 더욱 나쁜 (다른 사람들)

사자와 수퇘지

On a summer day,
어느 여름 날에,
when the great heat induced a general thirst,
큰 더위가 일반적인 갈증을 일으키는,
a Lion and a Boar came at the same moment to a small well to drink.
한 사자와 수퇘지가 같은 순간에 물을 마시기 위해서 작은 우물로 왔다.
They fiercely disputed
그들은 사납게 논쟁했다.
which of them should drink first,
그들 중 누가 먼저 물을 마셔야만 하는지를,
and were soon engaged in the agonies of a mortal combat.
그리고 곧 사투의 몸부림을 시작하게 되었다.
On their stopping on a sudden to take breath for the fiercer renewal of the strife,
싸움의 더 사나운 재개를 위해서 숨을 쉬기 위해서 갑자기 그들이 멈추자 마자,
they saw some Vultures waiting in the distance
그들은 몇몇의 독수리들이 멀리서 기다리고 있는 것을 봤다.
to feast on the one which should fall first.
먼저 쓰러질 하나를 실컷 먹기 위해서
They at once made up their quarrel, saying:
그들은 동시에 화해했다, ~말하면서
"It is better for us to make friends, than to become the food of Crows or Vultures,
"우리가 까마귀나 독수리들의 먹이가 되는 것보다, 친구가 되는 것이 더 좋아,
as will certainly happen if we are disabled."
그것은 우리가 불구가 되면 분명히 일어나니깐."

Those who strive are often watched by others
싸우는 사람들은 자주 다른 사람들에게 감시된다.
who will take advantage of their defeat to benefit themselves.
이익을 얻기 위해서 그들의 싸움을 이용할 (다른 사람들)

장난이 심한 개

A Dog used to run up quietly to the heels of those he met,
어떤 개는 그가 만난 사람들의 뒤꿈치로 몰래 달려가서
and to bite them without notice.
예고없이 그들을 물곤했다.
His master sometimes suspended a bell about his neck,
때때로 그의 주인은 그의 목 주위에 종을 매달았다,
that he might give notice of his presence wherever he went,
그가(개가) 어디를 가든지 그가(주인이) 그의 존재를 알아차리도록,
and sometimes he fastened a chain about his neck,
그리고 때때로 그는(주인) 그의(개의) 목 주위에 목걸이를 묶었다.
to which was attached a heavy clog,
그 체인에게 큰 무거운 통나무가 부착되었다,
so that he could not be so quick at biting people's heels.
그가 사람들의 뒤꿈치를 너무 빨리 물 수 없도록

The Dog grew proud of his bell and clog,
그 개는 그의 종과 무거운 통나무를 자랑스러워 하게 되었다,
and went with them all over the market-place.
그리고 장터 곳곳에 그것들과 함께 갔다.
An old hound said to him:
한 늙은 사냥개가 그에게 말했다:
"Why do you make such an exhibition of yourself?
"왜 너는 그렇게 웃음거리가 되니?
That bell and clog that you carry are not, believe me, orders of merit,
내 말을 믿어봐, 네가 가지고 다니는 그 종과 무거운 통나무는  공로 훈장이 아니라,
but, on the contrary, marks of disgrace,
그와는 반대로, 오히려 불명예의 표시야,
a public notice to all men
모든 사람들에게 하는 공식 통고야
to avoid you as an ill-mannered dog."
버릇 없는 개이기 때문에 너를 피하라는

Those who achieve notoriety often mistake it for fame.
악명을 얻은 사람들은 자주 그것을 명성으로 오해한다.
