THE CROW AND THE PITCHER

까마귀와 물주전자

In a spell of dry weather,

건조한 날씨 기간에,

when the Birds could find very little to drink,

새들이 마실 것을 거의 찾을 수 없을 때,

a thirsty Crow found a pitcher with a little water in it.

한 목마른 까마귀가 약간의 물이 들어 있는 물주전자를 찾았다.

But the pitcher was high and had a narrow neck,

하지만 그 물주전자는 높고 좁은 목을 가지고 있었다.

and no matter how he tried,

그리고 그가 아무리 노력을 해도,

the Crow could not reach the water.

그 까마귀는 그 물에 도달할 수 없었다.

The poor thing felt as if he must die of thirst.

그 불쌍한 것은 갈증으로 죽을 것만 같았다.

Then an idea came to him.

Picking up some small pebbles,

약간의 작은 조약돌을 집어 올려서,

he dropped them into the pitcher one by one. 

그는 하나씩 물주전자 속으로 떨어뜨렸다.

With each pebble the water rose a little higher

각각의 조약돌 때문에 그 물은 조금씩 더 높이 올라왔다.

until at last it was near enough so he could drink.

마침내 그가 물을 마실 수 있을 만큼 충분히 가까이 왔다.

_In a pinch a good use of our wits may help us out._

소년들과 개구리들

Some Boys were playing one day at the edge of a pond in which lived a family of Frogs.

어느날 몇몇 소년들이 어느 개구리 가족이 살고 있는 연못의 가장자리에서 놀고 있었다.

The Boys amused themselves by throwing stones into the pond so as to make them skip on top of the water.

그 소년들은 물수제비를 날리기 위하여 연못 속으로 돌을 던지며 놀았다.

The stones were flying thick and fast and the Boys were enjoying themselves very much;

그 돌을은 세차게 날아가고 있었고 그 소년들은 매우 많이 즐겁게 시간을 보내고 있었다;

but the poor Frogs in the pond were trembling with fear.

하지만 불쌍한 연못의 개구리들은 두려움으로 떨고 있었다.

At last one of the Frogs, the oldest and bravest, put his head out of the water, and said,

마침내 가장 나이가 많고 가장 용감한 개구리가 그의 머리를 물 밖으로 내밀고, 말했다.

"Oh, please, dear children, stop your cruel play!

"얘들아, 제발 잔인한 놀이를 멈춰!

Though it may be fun for you, it means death to us!"

비록 그것이 너희들에게 재미있을지 몰라도, 그것은 우리에게 죽음을 의미한다."

_Always stop to think whether your fun may not be the cause of another's unhappiness._

너의 재미가 또다른 사람의 불행의 원인이 아닐지 항상 멈춰서 생각해라.

THE RAT AND THE ELEPHANT

생쥐과 코끼리

A Rat was traveling along the King's highway. 

생쥐 한 마리가 천하의 공도를 따라서 여행을 하고 있었다.

He was a very proud Rat, considering his small size and the bad reputation all Rats have.

모든 생쥐들이 가지는 나쁜 평판과 그의 작은 크기를 고려하면, 그는 매우 자랑스러운 생쥐였다.

As Mr. Rat walked along--he kept mostly to the ditch--

그 생쥐가 걸어가면서, 그는 주로 수로를 따라갔다.

he noticed a great commotion up the road, 

그는 도로 위에서 큰 소동을 목격했다.

and soon a grand procession came in view.

그리고 곧 웅장한 행진이 보였다.

It was the King and his retinue.

The King rode on a huge Elephant adorned with the most gorgeous trappings.

With the King in his luxurious howdah were the royal Dog and Cat.

A great crowd of people followed the procession.

많은 사람들이 그 행렬을 따랐다.

They were so taken up with admiration of the Elephant, that the Rat was not noticed.

그들이 그 코끼리를 감탄하는데 열중해서, 그 생쥐를 알아차리지 못했다.

His pride was hurt.

그의 자존심이 상처입었다.

"What fools!" he cried.

"바보들! 그가 외쳤다.

"Look at me, and you will soon forget that clumsy Elephant!

나를 봐라, 그러면 너희는 곧 그 꼴사나운 코끼리를 잊을것이다!

Is it his great size that makes your eyes pop out?

너희들의 눈을 튀어 나오게 만드는 것이 그의 큰 크기인가?

Or is it his wrinkled hide?

아니면 그의 쭈글쭈글한 가죽인가?

Why, I have eyes and ears and as many legs as he!

야, 나는 그처럼 눈과 귀와 다리를 가지고 있다.

I am of just as much importance, and"

나는 아주 많이 중요하다, 그리고

But just then the royal Cat spied him,

그러나 그때 고귀한 고양이가 그를 발견했다,

and the next instant,

the Rat knew he was not quite so important as an Elephant.
