THE ASS AND HIS DRIVER

당나귀와 그의 주인

An Ass was being driven along a road leading down the mountain side,

당나귀 한 마리는 산허리를 아래로 통하는 길을 따라서 운전되고 있었다,

when he suddenly took it into his silly head to choose his own path.

그리고 그때 그는 갑자기 어리석게 자기 자신의 길을 선택하기로 생각하기 시작했다.

He could see his stall at the foot of the mountain, 

그는 산기슭에서 그의 마구간을 볼 수 있었다,

and to him the quickest way down seemed to be over the edge of the nearest cliff.

그리고 그에게 있어서 내려가는 가장 빠른 길은 가장 가까운 낭떠러지의 끝에 있는 것 같았다.

Just as he was about to leap over,

마침 그가 막 뛰어 건너려고 할 때,

his master caught him by the tail

그의 주인이 그의 꼬리를 잡고

and tried to pull him back,

그를 후퇴시키려고 했지만,

but the stubborn Ass would not yield and pulled with all his might.

그 고집 센 당나귀는 양보하지 않고 힘껏 당겼다.

"Very well," said his master, "go your way, you willful beast, and see where it leads you."

"매우 잘했다," 그의 주인이 말했다, "너의 길을 가라, 너는 고집 센 짐승이니깐, 그리고 그것이 너를 어디로 안내하는지를 봐라."

With that he let go,

그 말과 함께 그는 놓아주었다,

and the foolish Ass tumbled head over heels down the mountain side.

그리고 그 어리석은 당나귀는 산허리 아래로 거꾸로 넘어졌다.

_They who will not listen to reason but stubbornly go their own way against the friendly advice of those who are wiser than they, are on the road to misfortune._

도리를 따르지 않고 자신보다 더 현명한 사람들의 친근한 충고에 반하는 길을 고집스럽게 가는 사람들은 불행으로 가고 있다.

헤라클레스와 마부

A Farmer was driving his wagon along a miry country road after a heavy rain.

한 농부가 폭우가 온 후에 진흙투성이 도로를 따라서 그의 마차를 운전하고 있었다.

The horses could hardly drag the load through the deep mud,

말들은 깊은 진흙 사이에서 짐(마차)을 거의 끌 수 없었다,

and at last came to a standstill when one of the wheels sank to the hub in a rut.

그리고 마침내 바퀴 중 하나가 중심까지 홈에 내려 앉았을 때 (말은) 마침내 정지하게 되었다.

The farmer climbed down from his seat and stood beside the wagon looking at it

그 농부는 죄석에서 내려와서 그것을 보면서 마차 옆에 섰다

but without making the least effort to get it out of the rut.

하지만 바퀴를 홈에서 빼고자하는 어떤 노력도 하지 않았다.

All he did was to curse his bad luck

그가 했던 모든 것은 그우 불운을 저주하고

and call loudly on Hercules to come to his aid.

헤라클레스에 도와달라고 요청하는 것 뿐이었다.

Then, it is said, Hercules really did appear, saying:

그때, 헤라클레스가 정말로 나타나서 이렇게 말했다

"Put your shoulder to the wheel, man, and urge on your horses.

어깨를 바퀴에 대고 말을 채찍질해라.

Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it and whining about it? 

단지 바라보기만하고 투덜댄다고 마차를 움직일 수 있을 것 같아?

Hercules will not help unless you make some effort to help yourself."

헤라클레스는 네가 자신을 돕기 위한 어떤 노력도 하지 않으면 도와 주지 않을거야.

And when the farmer put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses,

그리고 그 농부가 바퀴에 어깨을 데고 말에게 채찍을 가했을 때,

the wagon moved very readily,

그 마차는 매우 쉽게 움직였다,

and soon the Farmer was riding along in great content and with a good lesson learned.

그리고 그 농부는 크게 만족하고 훌륭한 교훈을 배운채로 말을 타고 갔다.

_Self help is the best help._

스스로 돕는 것이 최선의 도움이다.

_Heaven helps those who help themselves._

하늘은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다.
