THE OWL AND THE GRASSHOPPER
올빼미와 베짱이
The Owl always takes her sleep during the day.
올빼미는 항상 낮동안에 한 잠을 잔다.
Then after sundown,
그리고나서 일몰후에,
when the rosy light fades from the sky and the shadows rise slowly through the wood,
장미빛의 빛이 하늘에서 사라지고 그림자들이 나무를 통해 천천히 올라올 때,
out she comes ruffling and blinking from the old hollow tree.
그녀는 오래된 나무로부터 깃털을 곤두세우고 눈을 깜박이면서 나온다.
Now her weird "hoo-hoo-hoo-oo-oo" echoes through the quiet wood,

and she begins her hunt for the bugs and beetles, frogs and mice she likes so well to eat.
그리고 그녀가 너무 먹기 좋아하는 벌레와 갑충, 개구리 그리고 쥐들을 사냥하기 시작한다.
Now there was a certain old Owl who had become very cross and hard to please as she grew older,
지금 나이가 들면서 매우 몹시 성미가 까다롭고 만족하기 어려워한 어떤 늙은 올빼미가 있었다.
especially if anything disturbed her daily slumbers.
특히 어떤것이 그녀의 매일의 잠을 방해한다면 그렇다.
One warm summer afternoon
어느 따뜻한 여름 오후에
as she dozed away in her den in the old oak tree,
그녀가 오래된 오크 나무의 굴에서 잠을 자며 시간을 보내고 있을 때,
a Grasshopper nearby began a joyous but very raspy song.
근처의 베짱이 한 마리가 즐겁지만 귀에 거슬리는 노래를 하기 시작했다.
Out popped the old Owl's head from the opening in the tree that served her both for door and for window.
그녀에게 문과 창의 역할을 동시에 하는 나무의 구멍에서 그 늙은 올빼미의 머리가 튀어 나왔다.
"Get away from here, sir," she said to the Grasshopper.
그녀가 베짱이에게 떠나라고 말했다.
"Have you no manners?
"예의가 없어요?"
You should at least respect my age and leave me to sleep in quiet!"
당신은 제 나이를 존중하고 제가 마음대로 조용히 잠을 잘 수 있게 해야합니다.
But the Grasshopper answered saucily that he had as much right to his place in the sun as the Owl had to her place in the old oak.
하지만 그 베짱이는 올빼미가 오래된 오크나무의 자기 자리에대한 권리 만큼 그는 양지에서 그의 자리에 대한 많은 권리를 가지고 있다고 건방지게 대답했다.
Then he struck up a louder and still more rasping tune.
그런 다음 그는 더 크고 훨씬 더 귀에 거슬리는 곡을 연주하기 시작했다.
The wise old Owl knew quite well that it would do no good to argue with the Grasshopper, nor with anybody else for that matter.
그 현명한 올빼미는 그 베짱이 또는 그밖의 누구라도 그 문제에 대해 논쟁하는 것은 도움이 되지 않을 거라는 걸 상당히 잘 알았다.
Besides, her eyes were not sharp enough by day to permit her to punish the Grasshopper as he deserved.
게다가, 그녀의 눈은 낮까지 베짱이를 처벌할 만큼 충분히 예리하지 않았다.
So she laid aside all hard words and spoke very kindly to him.
그래서 그녀는 모든 설명하기 어려운 말들을 치우고 그에게 매우 친절하게 말했다.
"Well sir," she said, "if I must stay awake, I am going to settle right down to enjoy your singing.
제가 깨어있어야만 한다면, 저는 당신이 노래하는 것을 즐기기 위해서 자리를 잡아야 하겠군요.
Now that I think of it, I have a wonderful wine here, sent me from Olympus, of which I am told Apollo drinks before he sings to the high gods.
제가 생각해 보니, 여기에 아폴로가 높은 신들에게 노래하기 전에 마셨다고 들은 올림푸스에서 저에게 보내준 훌륭한 와인이 있네요.
Please come up and taste this delicious drink with me.
제발 올라와서 이 맛있는 술을 함께 맛봐요.
I know it will make you sing like Apollo himself."
저는 이것이 당신이 이폴로 자신처럼 노래하게 만들거라는 것을 알아요.
The foolish Grasshopper was taken in by the Owl's flattering words.
그 어리석은 베짱이는 올빼미의 아첨하는 말에 속았다.
Up he jumped to the Owl's den,
올빼미의 굴로 점프해서 올라갔지만,
but as soon as he was near enough so the old Owl could see him clearly,
올빼미가 그를 명확하게 볼 수 있을만큼 충분히 가까이 가자마자,
she pounced upon him and ate him up.
그녀는 그에게 갑자기 달려들어 먹어버렸다.
_Flattery is not a proof of true admiration._
아첨은 진실된 찬양의 증거가 아니다.
_Do not let flattery throw you off your guard against an enemy._
아첨이 적에 대한 너의 경계를 벗어 던지게 하지 마라.
